With so many pond liner options available, choosing the right material can feel overwhelming.

Western Environmental Liner draws on more than 30 years of experience with every kind of pond and pond liner to help customers select the best pond liner material for their specific application.

Our goal is always to provide the highest value, and our point of pride is what’s best for you – never to oversell an unnecessarily heavy-duty product for your project, and never to recommend a material that won’t perform as needed.

For most projects, we suggest reinforced pond liners, which have the added benefit of affordable cost, combined with many other features. These liners are generally lighter, stronger, more tear-resistant, and overall more cost-effective than unreinforced alternatives. It’s worth noting that liner thickness alone does not equal quality. An unreinforced liner often needs to be much thicker to perform well, which can drive up the overall cost. In contrast, reinforced liners achieve greater strength and durability with less material.

That said, every project is unique. When flexibility and precise conformity to complex pond shapes is required, highly pliable materials such as PVC may be the best choice. Alternately, large, preformed pond liners can often yield the most reliable results.

For ponds that contain water (as distinct from toxic wastes), sun exposure is often the greatest detriment to consider. Particularly with large water ponds, steep slopes may prevent the pond liner from being fully covered with soil. In these cases, selecting a UV-resistant material is essential.

Reinforced Polyethylene (RPE) is one of the best all-around liner materials. It offers outstanding tear and puncture resistance, often outperforming products three times as thick. Available in thicknesses from 12 to 60 mil, RPE provides corresponding levels of UV resistance, with heavier grades lasting more than 20 years in full sun.

Reinforced Polypropylene (RPP) is usually the top choice for exposed applications. Our 45-mil RPP liners provide more than 20 years of service life when exposed, making them ideal for ponds and other fluid containment projects. While RPP is more expensive than RPE, its superior resistance to long-term sun damage makes it the right solution for many outdoor applications.

Beyond our own preferred materials, Western Environmental Liner can generally accommodate whatever materials are specified in a project design – we provide our own consultation at no charge, but sometimes a project comes pre-specified. And we can supply liners resistant to oils, chemicals, and waste for projects requiring more specialized containment.

As one of the world’s leading pond liner manufacturers, we are able to offer large-scale discounts and warranty-backed solutions – warranties are a crucial value in pond liner applications. Our more than 30 years of experience results in a professional team of experts ready to guide you toward the most effective, long-lasting, and economical pond liner for your needs. Investing in a high-quality liner means lasting protection, low maintenance, nearly unlimited design potential, and most importantly, a containment solution that endures over time and pays back its investment abundantly.

1. Do I need underlayment for a pond liner?

Yes. A geotextile underlayment protects your liner from punctures caused by sharp rocks or roots under the weight of a filled pond. While the liner ensures impermeability, the underlayment prevents hidden hazards from causing damage. See our guide to Geotextile Underlayment.

2. How much should a pond liner overlap?

For large ponds, plan on at least 5 feet of overlap around all edges to secure the liner in a trench. Larger projects may require more, while smaller ponds may need less. Use our online pond liner calculator to estimate liner size, and review our Large Pond Liner Installation Guide for complete instructions.

3. Can you join a pond liner?

Yes, but field welding is a specialized task and one of the leading causes of liner failure. Factory welding under controlled conditions ensures the strongest, most reliable seams. For best results, order a custom liner manufactured to your specifications. See our guide to Installation Tips and Pitfalls with Pond Liners for details.

4. What is the best liner for a pond?

Ponds vary in size and usage, but in general for large ponds, including fish ponds, Reinforced Polyethylene (RPE) offers the best balance of cost, durability, and performance. For smaller ponds or situations requiring high UV resistance, Reinforced Polypropylene (RPP) is recommended. While materials like EDPM rubber are widely available through retailers, better results usually come from RPE, PVC and HDPE - and see why RPE can be better than HDPE for pond liners.

5. How long does a pond liner last?

Quality pond liners should last at least 20 years. Always work with a trusted manufacturer and installer who can back their products with a 20-year warranty. This ensures peace of mind and protection for your investment.
